Practice + Disobedience
This lecture will take two building types as intellectual framework to contextualize an architecture of disobedience. The lecture argues that the systems of codes that regulate the form and use of cities often hamper the architect’s ambition to create new solutions to urban life and culture. By resisting the status quo of industry and governance, architects can utilize illegal practices to update disciplinary types and references. The lecture will postulate a critique on the universal premises of modern legislation, which have a limited capacity to adapt to local significance and site-specific characteristics. It will explore some historical and theoretical aspects of unlawful architecture. And it will utilize two design research projects to demonstrate ways for architects to upgrade their practice through disobedience.
About Per-Johan Dahl
Dr. Per-Johan Dahl is an architect and researcher. He holds a Ph.D. in Architecture from University of California Los Angeles, MArch from Lund University, and UC in Civil Engineering from Blekinge Institute of Technology. Currently an Associate Professor and Head of Department at Lund University Department of Architecture and the Built Environment, Dr. Dahl has taught at several universities in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the U.S. His research circulates around three areas: new modes of design thinking, the politics of urban form, and emergent building types. Dr Dahl is professional member of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA), Architects Sweden (SAR/MSA), and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He is faculty and board member of the Research Institute for Experimental Architecture (RIEA) and co-founder of smogstudio; a research-oriented design practice committed to mediate intersections and overlaps between architecture and urbanism. His research and practice have been published and exhibited internationally.
